The Morning After On the morning after the sun broke through the dark black shroud and the birds they started singing as if there had never been a doubt And we stood there in silence ‘cause words just seemed so out of place on the morning after there rose a brand new day On the morning when the gun was finally put away and the killing and dying and hatred had nothing else to say And people stepped from the shadows my friends it was something else to see And on the morning it rang out like a jubilee For you are loved don’t close your eyes For you are loved and a stranger cried On the morning we woke from a fevered dream Where the world had turned flat and we learned what this nightmare means And a body lay on the sidewalk I felt the touch of a strangers hand and we held onto to each other across the distance of this land [chorus] I heard a story of a third man walking walking beside you in the dark of the night Who was the third man walking and what did the third man say? Waiting there to hold you at the end of the day.

ALL NIGHT DEPANNEUR At an all night depanneur in Hull he was looking to make it home and the snow was falling on the ground so cold like the setting of a Christmas poem And he flashed his mind through the halls of time for a yesterday he used to know And reached at the back for the wine on the rack and grabbed two bottles to go. When I see the snow I see Sarajevo and that village burning by the road When I see the snow and all the things that I know I just can’t put them back no more in Kandahar ‘neath the desert stars I gave everything they’d need But the kid at the cash just stared right back and said $20 dollars please There’s a chopper sound that goes round and round in every one of my dreams And my Marie you waited patiently but it wasn’t me who finally made it home.

Running Back to You I met a road that called my name said stick with me boy you’ll never be the same Whispered words of constant change and endless plans to be arranged We got things that dull the pain But what I want is simple and plain To get my hands dirty in the morning rain I went running back to you What else could I do? Went running back to you What else could I do? I ain’t walking I’m running babe. I ain’t walking I’m running babe. I met a girl with the golden key said sign right here and we’ll give you these The back room boys want to hear you sing You play the game and then you kiss the ring But that ain’t me and I’m not your boy I to play for real not for shiny toys And I’ll give it to a hearts that is free I found a town at the end of the road where you could stay but it was never home Always a new word going down and the world held its breath for this town But there’s a place that holds my heart at little broken down but it’s a start And I know there’s a woman waiting there.

MILE OUTSIDE OF KIRKLAND She was standing by the roadside With a suitcase in her hand Heading off to somewhere She didn’t understand. And the snow was falling soflty like diamonds on the ground A mile outside of Kirkland and her world was burning down. She was feeling kinda tired though the morning was still young She was once wild and reckless but those days were gone. And ain’t it kinda funny how you wear each other down A mile outside of Kirkland and her world was burning down. Tell me darling Katie Where are you going to? Is it something you were needing? Or is it something you once knew? He wasn’t some kind of monster if that’s what you mean But life can be so hard and your hurt the ones you need She remembered all the nights He held her in her arms A mile outside of kikland and her world was burning down . The night shift was ended and the day crew came on. He came home to find that the one he loved was gone. And all the kings horses and ll the Kings men. Couldn’t put that love together again. She remembered all the nights He held her in his arms. A mile outside of Kirkland Her world was burning down.

FIELDS OF NORMANDY In a world of darkness someday a voice will sing In the silence from the guns I heard a church bell ring And I will carve your name for all the world to see So you can sleep in peace tonight in the fields of Normandy In the hedgerows and the wheat fields from Courseulles to Falaise We gave the youth of our nation who never came home again but in your time you lit a fire that all the world could see So sleep in peace ‎tonight my friend in the fields of Normandy. I will write your name at the abbeye d'ardenne And I will bring the chocolates for the children of Arnhem ‎At the Leopold canal where the water now flows free And I know you sleep in peace tonight in the fields of Normandy. Your name was on the a telegram that we saw the postman bring And we keep a place for you each night with the songs that we sing There are children who are living, the children of liberty And they sing for you tonight in the fields of Normandy. On the sand you wrote your name with the blood of liberty And died here in a foreign land so that others might be free It’s a spirit that the world still needs amidst the wars and refugees But you can sleep in peace my friend in the fields of Normandy.

RED DEER TO MARGAREE Passing time blowing smoke rings Reading a menu covered in coffee stains I can’t remember where we’ve been or where we’re going to. A take out cup for me and one for you. Headlights carve out figures in the night late night radio keeping me alive Rain drops streak the window pane Diesel fuel in a cool, damp rain I followed you from Red Deer to Margaree An old country song is ringing in my head I sure do feel tired but at least I aint dead you sleep so sound on my shoulder as I take the drivers wheel I followed you from Red Deer to Margaree. Thunder bay is two hours from sight We left the flatlands late last night. As sunlight rises on a distant sky and says good morning to our tired eyes. You look to me and I know that its alright. Someday we’ll put this truck away and get us a place out near the bay. And at night when you hold me tight and we hear the trucks go a rolling by I’ll have followed you from Red deer to Margaree.

CHILD OF GOD 04:55
THE CHILD OF GOD The angels gave him his name that’s the story she told They wrote it in blood in the rubble and stone and she held the child close as the soldiers approached just another poor mother and the Child of God I saw Mary and Martha in the camps on the border And Lazerus he called me from the belly of the hole She kept warm with a blanket with the Red Cross to thank it Just another poor mother and the Child of God Somewhere the angels are watching but men can be so goddamned hard for without papers you are forever stateless just another poor mother and the Child of God I’d give you mercy it’s the gift the poor But its harder to find that incense and myrrh Herod knew the game – it’s the stranger you blame even a mother and the Child of God I saw her waiting for water in the endless crowd I saw her watching the sky in the internment yard And she wept as his feet as the rain turned to sleet Just another poor mother and the Child of God. Somewhere the angels are watching but men can be so goddamned hard In a world grown cold she gave you love to hold Just another poor mother and the Child of God.

HOUSE WHERE LOVE DIED An empty hallway some dirty clothes A pizza box lying on the floor. What made me happy makes me want to cry Walking through the house where love died. Look in the kitchen, God it seems so small Remember all the parties that spilled out in the hall. We had a mansion, we never realized Now it’s the house where our love died. Let the lamb’s lie down where the lions run Use the warrrior’s sword in the harvest sun We had a kingdom but we’ve been downsized Now it’s the house where our love died. You call it a lifestyle “I just needed more” Starting over with nothing at 34. You took our baby “I left you visiting rights” So far from the house where our love died. On Saturday morning there’s an open house They’re selling off our home to a couple in love. But East of Eden where we lie tonight Dreaming of the house where our love died. An empty hallway some dirty clothes A pizza box lying on the floor. What made me happy makes me want to cry Walking through the house where love died.

IRON WORKIN’ MAN RON HYNES I know sometimes its hard to tell the Costello’s apart but you must see that through the years they’ve shown us lots of heart. For they went in search of fortune leaving life and love behind They were iron working men everytime. They were iron working men everytime. They were iron working men everytime. For they went in search of fortune leaving life and love behind They were iron working men everytime. There’s men who sail the seven seas and men who farm the land. Men been to the moon and men with power in their hands. But if you’re asking my opinion and the choice was always mine I’d take an iron working man everytime. I’ll take an iron working man everytime. I’ll take an iron working man every time. But if you’re asking my opinion and the choice was always mine I’d take an iron working man everytime. Call them spiders call them chokers Call them all a bunch of fish. Call them cowboys of the skies brother call them what you wish. But if the measure of a man is in the things he leaves behind I’ll take an iron working man everytime. I’ll take an iron working man everytime. I’ll take an iron working man every time. But if the measure of a man is in the things he leaves behind I’ll take an iron working man everytime. I’ll take an iron working man everytime. I’ll take an iron working man every time. For they took what they were given and they laid it on the line For they were iron working men they were iron working men They were iron working men everytime.

SUMMER BEFORE THE STORM ‘Tis the final days of summer we’ve lost our way back home The adults have left the island And abandoned us alone There’s a party on the beach but it can’t hide the distant roar And I’m holding to you darling in the summer before the storm. We built a shining tower Built it to the sky Danced beneath its wisdom As the days were rushing by But the words are now just fragments Dots and zeros without a form But I’m holding to you darling In the summer before the storm In the dark part of the night There’s a cry so far away and a baby is being born For tomorrow comes from today There’s a mighty wind a coming Blowing sticks and stones It’s the rage against the children That festers in rich men’s bones They’re burning oil on the mountain For what reasons I don’t know And I’m holding to you darling In the summer before the storm And the animals came walking They came two by two The birds and the honey bees and the monkeys from the zoo They passed the angry convoy of trucks with honking horns And they just kept on walking In the summer before the storm

“This is a brilliant folk album, and one for our times."
-The Spill Magazine

For the last three decades, the Grievous Angels have been carving out a unique place in the alt-roots landscape. Their songs conjure the tragic beauty of Canada’s northern blue collar frontier.

Their 8th album is a kick ass journey through dark and unsettled times.
