VILLAGE OF THE BOMB Johnny touched down in the village of the bomb Johnny touched down. Johhny touched down in the village of the bomb Just another day neath the Afghan sun. Johnny touched down. Johnny got his gun where the Pashtun run Johnny got his gun. Johnny got his gun where the Pashtun run A Manitoba boy he was 21 Johnny got his gun. Johnny got his gun at 21 While the pipers played and her tears did run Said she’d wait ‘til the kingdom come When Johnny got his gun. Johnny knew his way through the Panjwai Johny knew his way Johnny knew his way through the Panjwai Hunting down shadows that faded away Johnny knew his way. Johnny knew his way through the Panjwai Steady as they come he wasn’t there to play She was waiting back home ‘neath the Prairie sun Ya Johnny knew his way. Johnny in the lead hit the IED Johnny in the lead hit the IED Took it in the arms and up to the knees Johnny in the lead. Johnny in the lead hit the IED They medi-vacced him out to Germany She waiting back home ‘neath the prairie sun Where Johnny in the lead. In the village of the bomb the life goes on In the village of the bomb. In the village of the bomb the life goes on With the squawking of the chickens when the soldiers come In the village of the bomb. In the village of the bomb life goes on And the king horses can’t help Johnny run And all the kings men are hunkered down in the village of the bomb. In the village of the bomb life goes on It’s been this way since time begun Just another day ‘neath the Afghan sun In the Village of the bomb. Just another day ‘neath the Afghan sun In the Village of the bom. Just another day ‘neath the Afghan sun.

FOUR HORSES 04:43
FOUR HORSES To Fort Qu’appelle came a Dapple Grey As children coughed blood in the autumn rains Broke the treaty when the buffalo failed And fenced the land for the CP Rail. There’s four horses at the Great Divide Forget what they taught about the medicine line Like a storm on a distant sky Just Four horses at the Great Divide I saw a black horse at Cut Knife Creek But the great Poundmaker was a man of peace He spared the soldiers true to his word So they hung the braves at Fort Battleford There’s four horses at the Great Divide. Forget what they taught about the medicine line Like a storm on a distant sky Just Four horses at the Great Divide The Third Horse danced for the Great White Chief hunger is lesson that is so easy to teach kill a warrior you need a gun in hand To break a people you need a bureaucrat man There’s four horses at the Great Divide Forget what they taught you about the medicine line Like a storm on a distant sky Four horses at the Great Divide A pale horse waits by the mission school Progress they say can be so cruel But the spirit lives on across the great north plains And people are finding their voice again.

FORT ST. JOHN Just a short text message Though I know you’re still asleep But I’ve got 12 hour shifts Every night this week. We’re working at the gas plant And we’re here ‘til the work is done Just a short text message From up here in Fort St. John. There’s a full moon over the gas fields Same moon that shines back home Just a short text message From up here in Fort St. John I loved Sarah’s picture how she painted up her bike I checked it out on Facebook And I wrote 300 likes Two weeks in and two weeks out That’s what our life’s become We’re either fighting or making love Then I’m back to Fort St. John When we got married I thought we’d settle down But its walmart or the bunkhouse Ever since the mill’s been gone Just a short text message All I do since I’ve been gone I know you’re getting restless Oh baby please lets hang on

LONG-HAIRED WOMAN I gotta long-haired woman in a world that’s lost its way Gotta long-haired woman and I like it that way. She ain’t go two pennies but she’s ready for a rainy day. Everybody likes to twitter but they’re still lost in a fog Everybody’s got a trainer but no time to go for a walk But my baby says’s baby, ah you work too hard. Sister Rosetta she sure could play guitar They want to auto-tune her voice and get her on Reach for the Stars So she blew them all away Playing that sweet gibson guitar. She stole a dress from Frieda Kahlo And a goat from Marc Chagall. She stole a dress from Frieda Kahlo And a goat from Marc Chagall. Ya, there’s a lot of women prettier But my baby’s tougher than them all.

FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING It hasn’t been above 30 below in something like a week or so Radio calling it a big deep freeze And that icy wind is getting in all of our dreams. I keep thinking back to a simpler time When I didn’t have so much hanging on my mind I know sometimes I take it out on you But a little love baby gonna see us through. We’ve been waiting for the first signs of spring For so long it seems We’ve been waiting for the first signs of spring. This town’s been good to us, we made some friends and got a start But they moved the plant to a third world state And things round here have never been quite the same So I ran some jobs no questions asked Because they paid up front and they paid in cash I told the man I want out this time He said one more load and man its gotta go tonight. CHORUS Last night I dreamed it was summer time We were down home in the warm sunshine And the fiddlers played the St. Anne’s Reel For the exiles come gathered for the feast. And my old man whom I used to blame He stood beside me and we looked the same. And all those sins of yesterday We just laid down and walked away. It hasn’t been above 30 below In something like a week or so. Radio calling it a big deep freeze And that icy wind is getting in all of our dreams.

COAT CHECK GIRL There’s a coat check girl she ain’t saying what she knows Her boyfriend’s gonna take her to the picture show. There’s a 51 Mercury gunning at the lights Mess with that car and you’re playing with your life. There’s a coat check girl and her eyes are ice Most men never look that high. Cop walks up and the window rolls down There’s a hail of gunfire across Landsdowne. Blood on the ground and a cop near death Change the lino type and start the press There’s a coat check girl a long way from home She’s living it up like she’s never known. There’s an engine revving on Roncansville Boyd’s in the bank grabbing the till When it gets too hot they hit Montreal And party it up til the money’s gone There’s a coat check girl She ain’t saying what she knows She’s dancing on the table In her new mink stoll They’re busting out of jail gonna raise some hell Tired of rotting in a prison cell At the old Don Jail they run out of road With Sushan and Jackson hanging from a rope. There’s a coat check girl and you’ll never see her cry She’s as hard as nails and just getting by. There’s a coat check girl she ain’t saying what she knows As the years go by she ain’t ever going home.

BLUE ALBERTA SKIES It’s September in Toronto and the sky’s been smoggy for days And my baby she’s got that look in her eye And I know she’s been dreaming about Blue Alberta Skies. She keeps talking about an Appaloosa And the sweet shades of prairie sky. A city boy might love her but he can’t stop it when she cries Because he knows she’s dreaming About Blue Alberta Skies. And we all have a place a sacred space We can go to in our mind A place where we can hide A place where we can ride ‘Neath Blue Alberta Skies. She calls her old man when she gets lonesome And they talk about life on the land About the drive shaft on the John Deere And the price of timothy and rye And then they start talking About Blue Alberta Skies.

MURPHY GIRL 03:17
MURPHY GIRL She was a Murphy Girl don’t really think I need to say more She was a Murphy Girl don’t really think I need to say more Saw her dancing barefoot right there on the hardwood floor She was swinging and a swaying with a vodka in her hand She was swinging and a swaying with a vodka in her hand She was singing louder, louder than the big rock band She was a Murphy Girl don’t really think I need to say more She was a Murphy Girl don’t really think I need to say more Saw her dancing barefoot right there on the hardwood floor INSTRUMENTAL They call it manslaughter running with Murphy’s daughter They call it manslaughter running with Murphy’s daughter She’ll put you through the ringer and treat you like cannon fodder We blew through the town like a hurricane in the rain Blew through the town like a hurricane in the rain Woke up in the morning without a penny to my name INSTRUMENTAL She was a Murphy Girl don’t really think I need to say more She was a Murphy Girl don’t really think I need to say more Saw her dancing barefoot right there on the hardwood floor

Madeleine’s Daughter Well I almost died the moment I saw her With a boyfriend by her side She had your eyes and your crazy way of laughing As I looked at her, the years went flying by And I called out Aren’t you Madeline’s daughter And I call out But she was crossing the road. And my voice was lost in the traffic Just a ghost from long ago. When you’re 21 there’s a world that’s a waiting Like the way we used to wait for the dawn Remember those nights and crazy punk rock fights I’m so glad you finally found a home. The days drag on seems like forever But the years go racing by Time is a casino and it will leave you with zero Unless you share it With a lover and a friend

Reactionary Blues They’re melting down the ice caps And raising up the trolls. Putting shutters on the windows And burning all the notes. The climate bell is ringing But they’ve turned it back to snooze. I’m just here a singing the reactionary blues There’s a war you never heard of Better join the big parade Or they’ll cut off all your funding That’s how they play the game. We ain’t this is all together or don’t ya watch the news Get everybody singing the reactionary blues They’re Thatcher’s ugly children And their world is black and white And they’re hunting down the rainbow And spoiling for a fight. They’ll put you in a message box Where nothing is really true Leave you there a singing the reactionary blues It’s about pressing all the buttons And turning all the screws It’s about a Third World in the Northland Where the children always lose/ The fat cats are feasting on your future Like they always do While you’re left a singing the Reactionary blues I saw a Maple leaf a flying That wasn’t ripped or torn I saw a world that needed healing Where little dreams were born. It’s gonna take a lot of effort To rebuild the things they blew But I’ll never sing again The reactionary blues No I don’t want no more of your reactionary blues.

DIAMONDS IN THE SNOW You threw these diamonds in the snow You threw them away, thought no one would know. What were you thinking, oh didn’t you know? Little diamonds, diamonds in the snow. A lonely field, on a cold dark night There’s a light shining in the sky. Just a light, you might never know But it will light, light your way home. You threw these diamonds in the snow You threw them away, thought no one would know. What were you thinking, oh didn’t you know? Little diamonds, diamonds in the snow. There was a child, she had a dream She looked to you and she looked to me Just a chance to make your world whole She gave you diamonds, diamonds in the snow. You threw these diamonds in the snow ‘cause you judge your life by what you can own But they shine so bright, brighter than your gold. Just little diamonds in the snow. Its just a chance to make your world whole, Touch these diamonds, diamonds in the snow.
